Adding
your website to search engines and directories before knowing your
best keywords is an exercise in futility. Likewise, if you haven't
done everything you can to make your site "search engine friendly",
you might just as well be writing your url down on a little scrap
of paper, crumpling it up and tossing it in the general direction
of the search engines (ok - somewhere in the direction of California.
:-) ). Your submissions will be just about as effective.
There
are many things that can prevent a site from being added to the
search engines. Most of them are easy to avoid - if you talk to
the right person beforehand.
To
make sure every base is covered for you, I take a three step approach
to optimizing your website for the search engines. I can then add
three other elements to promote your site once that initial optimization
is completed.
The
first three steps are:
1.
Keyword Analysis
Without knowing what keywords will get you the most amount of targeted
viewers, you can waste a lot of your time for very little return.
This
is the very first thing I provide and it helps me to find a focus
for your promotions.
2.
Search Engine Optimization
Once you know what keywords you should be using for maximum
effect, you need to know how to utilize those keywords within the
copy of your website's text, its meta tags, and all the little added
extras that can give you that slight advantage over your competition.
It's also very important to know if your website is using techniques
that might actually block the search engines from finding and adding
your site to their databases!
3.
Search Engine Submissions
Submitting your site to the search engines and directories is certainly
important - but without the two steps above, it simply won't accomplish
much. (How far can you throw?)
When
your webmaster has made the requested changes in step #2, I submit
your site to the search engines and directories - both the top few,
and the country-specific and/or topic specific-locations around
the world.
After
these first three steps (all part of my Website
Optimization Package) are accomplished, the stage has been set.
The primer has been laid down ... but you now need to paint.
It
can take a year or more for sites to get the attention they deserve
in the search engines. Most search engines these days have both
an aging delay (it has more to do with the age of links pointing
to a site than the age of the site itself) and a "popularity"
delay in place. This means that your site will get noticed more
as the links pointing towards it age - and as you get more of those
links to point towards it in the first place. Plus, keeping your
site fresh and dynamic with newly added content in the form of new
pages to the site or new articles for your resources section, or
new press releases to let the world know about your company's latest
developments, will help in this direction too. More content means
more information that people are interested in linking to. And the
links you *don't* have to ask for are the best kind!
To
continue your site's promotion over time, I have the following options
available to you - and on a monthly basis any package involving
one or all of them, also includes a regularly updated Google Site
Map (a file that allows Google to see where all of the pages of
your site are) plus monthly reporting:
1.
Link Research & Acquisition
Researching the right links to submit your site to is a very time
consuming and important part of any Internet promotion campaign.
Why? Because each link going back to your website is a powerful
"vote" for your site. Many search engines use "link popularity"
(or those "votes") as a gauge of how important your website is and
how close to the top it should be for a given search. They also
pay attention to what words other sites are using when they link
to your site. Search engines such as Google, have built this "popularity"
algorithm right into their search display equations. After all,
if others thought your site was important, why shouldn't they? The
more quality sites you have linking to your own, the higher up in
the search engines' display your site will appear for your chosen
keywords. This will drive more traffic to your website.
2.
Content Creation
Not only is it important to maximize the effectiveness of what's
already on your website, but it's also necessary to add more. I
provide more content for your site so that not only can you help
your potential customers find what they're looking for, but you
can also offer up more in the way of keywords for the search engines
to latch on to. The more they find, the more likely it is that your
site will appear for terms that are important to your business.
This content creation can take the form of added pages for your
website, press releases, or articles that will better explain the
technology or philosophy behind your product or service, or offer
some assistance geared towards your target audience.
3.
Google AdWords Campaign Creation & Management
If you don't already have a budget set aside for online advertising,
I can help you develop one. One of the most successful ways to get
your website some quick placement while we're working on your links
and content, is by participating in "pay-per-click" locations such
as Google AdWords. This allows your ads to be found on the most
popular search engine online today. The traffic that comes to your
site as a result of these click throughs, will be highly targeted
traffic. And you pay only when someone clicks on your advertisement.
These people will have been specifically searching for exactly what
your website provides. This makes them many times more likely to
actually purchase your products or services.
I create
a Google AdWords account for you, pick the best keywords to market
your product, create enticing ads to Google's specification and
then regularly monitor the account so that you stick to your budget
and get the most out of it. Note that the charges for your click
throughs are over and above my fee for creating and monitoring your
Google AdWords account.
With
millions of sites on the web today, and millions more appearing
as you read this, a well-rounded promotions strategy is the best
way to be sure that your website will be found.
