In
advertising, it is essential to know your target audience. This
is just as true on the Internet as it is on the TV or in print.
Targeting the wrong keywords can have disastrous results! Imagine
spending tons of energy (not to mention money!) on promoting your
website using a particular keyword - only to have nothing
happen?
There
are two dangers when it comes to picking keywords:
If
you pick the wrong keywords - keywords that are too general in their
meaning, then the people coming to your site won't be looking for
what you offer at all. They'll simply take a quick glance through
your index page before they hit the "back" key on their
browser. You will have entirely wasted your efforts. Even if you
do see a bit of an increase in the amount of visitors to your site,
not much will come of it.
If
your keywords are so specific that very few people actually search
the web for anything like it, then you might very well place highly
within the search engines for that term, but you certainly won't
see an increase in visitors to your website.
The
trick is to think like your potential customers or clients. If you
knew absolutely nothing about your industry, what would YOU type
into a search engine to find your company, resource or service?
The
key to any good keyword analysis is discovering which keywords have
the least competition AND the most amount of searches.
